Rainy day fun

It's a rainy day in Seattle. I need to work on jewelry for my next show on November 26th at the new Lynnwood High School. Instead I'm playing with my new flower press. It is amazing! You put the freshly cut flowers in between the cloth, put the felt pieces over, press them between this pottery press and put it in the microwave for 30 seconds. It's SO easy!

The flowers don't even discolor when they dry out. I'm planning to use them to put on a table I'm refinishing. Look for a picture when it's finished.

Westport Seafood Festival

I had a successful day at the Westport Seafood Festival. It was a perfect sunny day with great friends and a fairly good crowd. I think it will be on my agenda again next year.

I was pretty busy so I didn't take many pictures.

 
My friend Debbie lives in Westport. She sells sterling chains and rings so she shared my booth. Her chains complimented my jewelry and I was able to change some dragonfly earrings into a pendant for a customer. Debbie is in the background in this picture talking on her cell phone. A friend from the Portland area also came and brought the canopy we used. She put her beaded amulet bags on the table and they attracted alot of attention.

 
This picture shows the tray I made. I pressed flowers, glued them to the inside of the tray and poured resin over them. It creates a plastic-like coating that withstands heat and cold. Alot of people were interested in the starfish I coated with resin. I was going to make mobiles with them but I didn't have time before the festival. Maybe next year...

  
My husband put some of his photographs out too. They were a good draw for men waiting for their wives  who were looking at jewelry. His famous dragonfly picture was popular. It was used to make my business cards.

 
I had stiff competition right across from my booth. Angi lives in Westport and besides her jewelry she makes cute bags from recycled tshirts, little paperbag albums and tie-dyed onesies. I love the unique displays she made for her jewelry. For earrings she had two lamps mounted on a slice of log and had holes punched around the bottom of the lampshades. They are in the background in this picture.  She made the rustic wooden fence surrounding her booth as well. We exchanged cards and hopefully will meet again next year.

I'm taking a short break then I'll be getting ready for Christmas. I'll be participating in two local shows this year. Hopefully I will also have time to add jewelry to my etsy shop soon.

Summer fun

I took a week off from making jewelry and getting ready for the Westport Seafood Festival.

We had our daughter-in-law Stephanie, her mom Marilyn and our 2 grandkids Declan and Alina here for a week. It was SO much fun! We went to the Seattle Premium Outlet Mall for 10 hours of shopping. The kids were great! Alina loved the attention from both of her grandmas and Declan liked the rides in the mall.

Declan didn't stick around long enough to let me take very many pictures.

Our house is sure quiet since they left! The only thing they left behind is a summer cold for me but Alina's kisses were worth it!

He's already 4!

Two posts in one day!

Today is my adorable grandson Declan's birthday. He's 4 already! I can remember when he was born.....the first grandson in our family. He just gets cuter as he gets older.

I'm not sure he'll like this one when he gets older but it's one of my favorite.

Out and about

In between working on my jewelry we had our 9 year old grandson staying with us. It was fun!

We went to one of my favorite places Country Village for a walk. Sam didn't want to go but then didn't want to leave.

 

The playground is kind of unique with its vintage merry-go-round and pirate ship.

 
 

Last night after Sam left we went site seeing at Mill Creek pond. There were hundreds of frogs! This is the only one that was close enough for my camera.

Seashore jewelry

I'm busy getting ready for the Seafood Festival in Westport on Sept. 3rd. I'm making a new line of jewelry called my "Seashore" line. I'm using shells that I collected from the Westport beach and some of the sand.

These shells are drying after the first coat of resin.

 

I am covering these sand dollars and starfish with resin but I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them yet. Maybe a mobile?

 

 

I'm also doing a tray. I laid real pressed flowers and beads in the bottom of it and poured resin on top. I still have to pour another coat so that it's flat and even then I'm going to paint the tray. Any ideas what color?

 

I'd love any feedback you have.

Summer 2011

Summer's here and I'm keeping myself busy!

I'm planning on participating in the Seafood Festival in Westport, WA on September 3, 2011. I'll be selling the new jewelry in my "seashore" line. I'll be posting pictures here as soon as I get more done.

Here are some pictures of what's been going on in my world this summer. This is my dog Ellie and me at Westport beach on the 4th of July weekend. It's beautiful here and lots of people were out surfing that day.

 

Ellie is not impressed with the waves! I guess she's not a water dog.

Spring 2011

It's officially here! It's nice that the weather's warmer but I can do without some of the rain. I've taken another long break from posting here but now that spring is here maybe I'll be more motivated. Even though it was raining yesterday we went out for a short walk on a wetlands trail near Boeing. Ellie loves to be outside despite the rain and really needs alot more exercise than my old dog Pepper.

I've been experimenting and making a different kind of jewelry these days. I love it so much I think I'll keep it for myself. Let me know what you think. Do you like it? Hate it? Would you wear it?

This lariat necklace has a bronze heart with citrines. 

This necklace has a vintage-looking pill case with a green stone drop. I like it paired with the lariat necklace. The case even opens but I'm not sure I'd put anything in it before I cleaned it.

Oregon trip

I enjoyed my trip to Oregon...especially the weather. It was sunny and warm the whole time I was there. Walking my friend's dog Maddy was my daily purpose for getting up and out of the house. The apartment complex is really nice.

 
 
 
When Tony came to visit on the weekend we were driving around and found the Tualatin Wildlife Reserve. I love this 'living wall'.

 
 
The best part of my trip was getting our new 'baby'. She came from the Oregon Dog Rescue and was up for adoption at the PetSmart next to the apartment complex. I fell in love with her the first time I saw her. After convincing Tony that we needed a new pup I emailed them to see if I could adopt her. I was told that we lived outside their boundary of 2 hrs from Portland. Just by chance I decided to try again by going to the store again the next Saturday and they let me have her!

Meet Ellie. She's a silky terrier cross and about a year old. She is very calm and loving and just wants to please us. She loves our cat Jello but the other cats won't have anything to do with her.

A New Beginning

I've gone over and over things in the past few months. Grieving the loss of my dog, trying to figure out what I want to do with 'the rest of my life' and trying to get up the motivation and interest to start doing things again. I haven't spent much time making jewelry. I've avoided reading blogs and feeling guilty that I'm not keeping mine up. I think I just needed some down time to grieve. The good news is I think I'm getting back on track.

I spent the past few weeks near Portland, Oregon taking care of my friend's dog. It was therapeutic taking Maddy on long walks and spending time alone to think and just enjoy the outdoors. The weather was beautiful and it helped me to heal. I'm looking at this as a new beginning.

I took the train to Portland. It was a comfortable, relaxing ride. I had a great chat with a couple of kids on the train...one going down to tour the university for a possible scholarship and the other a student in a health sciences program in Portland. It was interesting to listen to their view on education and excitement in their studies. It gave me a new perspective and some insight into my direction.

Pepper

Today I have to say goodbye to my sweet dog Pepper. It is the hardest thing I have ever had to do. Earlier this week we found out Pepper has intestinal cancer, a fast spreading type of lymphoma. It has already metastasized into other parts of his body. I decided that I was not going to let him suffer and keep him around just for my benefit. It's time.

I got Pepper when he was just 6 weeks old in October of 1999. He was just a black ball of fur and with his black eyes it was hard to tell his front end from the back. That first day I put him in my briefcase and took him to the office with me. From that time on my clients would look forward to seeing Pepper, sometimes more than me. I took him everywhere with me. He was with me through some very tough times and comforted me. When I went to Calgary on weekends I would take him to my parent's house where he would lay on Dad's knee for hours looking out the front window with him. My Dad loved Pepper and the feeling was mutual. I like to think that is where Pepper is going...to heaven to be with my Dad again and lay on his knee forever.

Christmas jewelry

I'm been busy updating my shop today. I added some cute Christmas earrings as well as some of the jewelry I've been meaning to get listed for a long time.

We got about 15 minutes of snow today but it didn't stay on the ground. It is suppose to be cold with snow for a few days early in the week but clear up for our Thanksgiving Day on Thursday. It was kind of nice to see snow falling this morning. It reminded me of home....where they now have about a foot of snow. I don't miss the cold though. I stayed in all day and worked on my shop. The cats wouldn't go outside today either.

Christmas is coming!

I know I haven't blogged in a VERY long time. I can't say that I've been that busy either....just not into blogging. I've had alot of fun over the past few weeks, going to jewelry classes, visiting with friends and making cards.

This is what I've been making.

 

I love these chain maille earrings! I need to take some better pictures before I put them in my shop. I also made a "mended hearts bracelet" at a class I went to but I need to take a picture of it as well.

While Tony was away in Alaska for 10 days I had a crafting party at my house. First my friend Diane came down from Vancouver and we made Christmas cards then another friend came up from Portland and we did some beading and made more cards. It has really put me in the Christmas spirit!

 
These folded Christmas trees are so easy and fun to make. If anyone is interested leave a comment and I'll put a tutorial on my blog.

 
This snowglobe has a few steps to it. The stamps are all done separately then the globe is covered with Diamond Glaze and sprinkled with Prisma glitter. We were walking around with sparkly hands and faces for a few days after we made these.

Our pets were doing what they do best......sleeping.

It's done!

Our floors were finished just in time for our company! My cousin Terry and his wife Shelly came to visit for the weekend. They live in northern B.C. and stopped on their way home from the Oregon coast. We thoroughly enjoyed their visit but I wish the weather would have been better. There are so many beautiful places I would love to show them but the rain demonstrated why it's so green here.

We were a few days behind getting the floors finished  so we didn't get our new appliances until yesterday. They really add to our new kitchen!

 
We haven't decided whether we will put an area rug in the livingroom yet. We're still enjoying our new floors.

 

It's hard to take a picture without at least one of our pets peaking in.

 

Now we can run the dishwasher at the same time as the t.v. Our old dishwasher drowned everything else out...including people trying to talk.

 

I love the extra counter space with the new built-in microwave. 

 
It's different having the freezer at the bottom of the fridge but alot easier to reach the things we use all the time. The water spout is inside the door of the refridgerator.

 

To add to our newly renovated house we framed Tony's prize-winning cowbird picture with a barnboard frame. I'm sure Mia would rather have a real bird there. Unfortunately she has some behavior problems and we have to get rid of her. Do you know anyone who would like a beautiful cat who doesn't know how to use a litterbox?

I'm off to Fusion Beads for a class tonight. Hopefully I'll have new jewelry to put in my shop soon.

Renovation update

It's been a busy week here. Last week we cleared out our main floor and prepared to have it painted. My stepson Matt (who used to have his own painting business) came over and spent two days painting our kitchen, front hall and livingroom before he ran out of paint.

 
That's no small task when you have 4 cats and a dog running around! Now we need to decide what color to paint the downstairs bathroom and buy more paint. Because we painted there was too much moisture in the air to have the floors done. Who woulda thought?

Yesterday the flooring guy came and ripped out all the old hardwood in the front hall and the carpet in the livingroom. He took off all the doors, the toilet in the bathroom and the baseboards.

 

This guy works really hard!

 
 
The floor in the livingroom will have 2 layers of cork underlay so it will be level with the kitchen. The wood laminate will be put over top of our kitchen linoleum. Because of the moisture here in the Pacific NorthWest you have to have a good moisture barrier under the flooring. I'm glad we didn't try to put it in ourselves!

Hopefully we will be able to put our house back together by tomorrow. We are getting company for the weekend on Friday!

I went for my 6 week checkup for my foot and ankle surgery this morning. My doctor was very pleased with my progress. He said I was ahead of schedule for what he anticipated my healing time would be. Yeay!!

Birthday Weekend

What a busy week I've had! On Friday we signed the papers and are now homeowners. Now for the renovating and decorating. We spent all day Saturday looking at towel bars, cupboard knobs and kitchen and bathroom tiles. Today we take back what I bought that didn't work out. I'm having so much fun!

Yesterday was my birthday. My present to myself is to take two jewelry classes at Fusion Beads. Maybe it will help me get my inspiration back. Tony drove me to Seattle and on the way to the store we stopped at Gasworks Park. I had only ever seen it from the water and had never been there. It's a Seattle landmark. It's very interesting and pretty overlooking Lake Union and downtown Seattle. I took a few pictures of course.

It was a nice day so there were a few boats on Lake Union.

From the space needle you can take a ride on The Duck. It goes on land and water and looks like so much fun.

 
We watched a few float planes take off from the lake.

 
I always love looking at the floating homes on Lake Union. It looks like a fun community to live in.

 
As we were leaving the park I noticed that the trees had already changed color and the leaves were falling. It really is fall in Seattle.

 
What a fun birthday I had yesterday. Now I hope to spend the coming year getting healthy and in shape.

A new day

Today is a new day and I'm ready for a new challenge. I've had a stressful few weeks coping with my recovery and last week I found out my son was in a motorcycle accident. My son is home from hospital and continuing to heal. Luckily he will be OK and I'm ready to move on with a more positive outlook .

It has been hard to think about new designs and making new jewelry.  I finished a few more bracelets and made a trendy new brass necklace. This necklace is one of my favorites so far.

 
 

The bracelets are very time consuming but I love to make the peyote stitch tubes while I watch tv at night. The first one is made with smokey quartz beads with copper accents and the second has amber beads with gold accents. I will be putting them in my shop soon.

 
 

I'm hoping to get my inspiration back and have more jewelry for my shop soon.

Weekend projects

I hope everyone had a good Labor Day weekend. Our weather wasn't great so I spent alot of time inside finishing off some projects I had started. Hopefully I can get some of the jewelry in my shop this week.

This is the display I made for my smaller jewelry. I was going to put the knobs on it to hang jewelry from but I liked it better without. I bought the frame in the "damaged" section of the Ross store. It used to be a mirror but the mirror broke. It was cheap! I bought some cork, added a bit of batting to it and glued material over it. Now I can tack jewelry on it with push pins for display.

 

 

This is what it looks like with a necklace tacked up. I'm thinking of putting in staples to hang earrings on too.

 

I finished these two pearl necklaces as well. It's hard to see what they will look like on but I love how they turned out.

 

My grandson Camden is two years old  next week. I have to get this card I made him in the mail now. 

This is the inside. I love the new border punch I bought at TJMaxx. I'm sure I'll get good use out of it.

 

I finished some bracelets as well but I didn't get them photographed. Check back to see them later this week.

Evergreen State Fair

We had a great time at the fair yesterday! I wore a kneepad so I could last longer wheeling around the fair on my knee scooter. I lasted for over 3 hours!

My favorite things were the beautiful quilts, crafts and looking at Tony's winning photographs displayed.

 

 

 

 

Tony was proud to find one of his winning photographs in this glass case on display. This was his first time entering photographs in the fair.

 

 

The lighting in the building wasn't very good and reflected back on the photographs.

 

 

Great day at the fair...now back to work to finish all my unfinished projects.

2 weeks post surgery

It's a beautiful sunshiny day here in the PNW! I've been recovering from my surgery slowly and feeling better everyday. I have new pictures of my foot (for those of you who wish to see them) and I have some new cards to share. I've been working on my jewelry but I haven't finished my display frame or a complete piece yet.

This is what I've been doing alot of...and usually with company.

 

KC our 'killer cat' has a very unique personality. This is how she sleeps when she's outside.

 

Jello and Mia are usually out playing with bugs or here... waiting at the door to be let in.

 

Jello has pretty much completely recovered from his terrible car accident but you can still see the remains if you look into his eyes. He has a bit of brain damage but he's still the smartest cat we have. His tail wags uncontrolably sometimes and he doesn't have alot of depth perception but otherwise he's pretty normal. I'm sure he has another 8 long exciting lives to enjoy!

 

These are the new cards I made. This one was for my good friend's daughter Alysha who just had a new baby boy.....Finnley Casper Edward Aschenberger VI.....now that's a name!

 

This is the birthday card I made for my sister Linda. The butterfly wing has been added again to make it 2D. I think it's my favorite card.

Post-surgery

It's been a week since I had my ankle and foot surgery and I'm starting to feel better. One of the most difficult things for me is sitting at my computer with my foot down. I'm suppose to keep it elevated as much as possible.

I'm not sure everyone is interested in my gory pictures so if you aren't you need to sign off now. First, a picture of the beautiful flowers I bought myself yesterday at the Country Village Farmer's Market. They were only $5!!

 

My cat Mia was laying in her favorite spot...on the lower shelf of our table just below the flowers. I couldn't resist taking her picture too.

 

Now for the "not so pretty" pictures. I had a bunion removed from my left foot and some bone spurs taken off my ankle. My ankle starting bothering me in April when I went to Disneyland with my grandson and stepdaughter. It was so painful I could barely walk but I couldn't waste a trip to Disneyland with Sam...so I kept walking on it. The swelling never did go down so I had it xrayed. I have arthritis in my ankle and the bone spurs were pinching nerves. I must have damaged the ligaments as well because they were too loose and didn't support my ankle in place. SO...the dr tightened the ligaments, took out MANY bone spurs (one even floating loose) and put 3 screws in my toe to support it when he did the bunion. OUCH!

 

 
 

When I'm up and around I have a bandage and a "boot" to support it but I can't put weight on my foot AT ALL for another 5 weeks! I'm not sure how I'm going to manage except that I have this cool knee scooter to get me around. Today we went for a short walk in Forest Park in Everett with the dog.

 

That is all my excitement for the past week. I have made a few cards but I'm planning to start back on my jewelry as soon as I get some energy back. I'll be blogging occasionally when I can manage. Come on by and check for new posts when you can.

Lynden Fair

We had a great time yesterday at the fair. I love the Lynden Fair because it's not too big and you can cover most of it in less than a day.

We started at the Lego displays. Most of the kids who made these were 6 and 7 years old!

 

I spent alot of time looking at the handmade quilts. These were my favorites. I've always wanted to learn to quilt but have never "got around to it" with all the other crafts I do.

This "bugs" quilt was my favorite and it also won the People's Choice for that day.

Next we went to look at the animals. I fell in love with these adorable piglets.

This little guy was my favorite. He looked so content sleeping.

....until the crowds disturbed him.

It was chow time for these piglets but their dish was turned upside down. They didn't seem to notice.

The llamas were interesting.

This brown one was very unique.....but he wouldn't stand still long enough for me to take his picture.

 

You couldn't see his eyes through his puff of hair....but he was very curious.

This goat loved me! He kept jumping up on the side of the pen to see if I had something for him. He even tapped me with his hoof a few times trying to get my attention. He wouldn't keep still long enough for me to get a clear picture though.

Even though we have 4 cats at home I had to go in the kid's petting area to see the kittens. I found one that looked just like our Sevie....but Tony wouldn't let me bring it home.

There are two more fairs coming up that we usually go to but I won't be able to make it this year. I'm having surgery on my foot and ankle tomorrow and will be laid up for the next 6 weeks.

I'll be off for a few days then I'm hoping to be back making jewelry and blogging again.

New pearl necklace

It was still so hot here today I finally went back to the gym....to cool off in the pool. When I got home I sat with the fan on and made some new jewelry. I got the pattern from the Bead Style Special Issue Pearls. I thought pearls were outdated but they're making a comeback. There are so many great patterns in this magazine. This is the one I made. I love the variety of fresh water pearls!

I still have to finish the ends then I'll be putting it in my shop.

We're off to the Lynden Fair tomorrow. I hope it's not too hot!

Seattle scenery

More pictures from our weekend...

After the Tattoo Expo we took a drive up Queen Anne hill. The view is spectacular! It was a beautiful day and there were alot of boats on Lake Union.

Looking over the railing I saw lots of wild blackberries. They were impossible to get to though.

We took a drive through the neighborhood.

And on the way home we drove past Green Lake Park. It was packed with people....mostly around the water trying to keep cool.

When we got home I had supper on the deck. Yum!

Seattle Tattoo Expo (part 2)

Yesterday was so much fun....and educational for me. I'd never seen a Burlesque show before. I wasn't the only person taking pictures either. I thought it was done with style....and I was seriously trying to see their tattoos. Tony was enjoying the show too!

I can't remember their names but this girl was suppose to be a beach bunny.

I'm not sure what this next girl was suppose to be....a doll I think. She was on rollerskates! The music was very unique.

 

After the show we headed back inside to check out more of the booths. There were some a long ways from home....Milan, Italy...Oslo Norway...and Spain.

As we were leaving I saw a guy with extremely long dreads. I asked him if we could take his picture. He was too hot and tired to get up.

His girlfriend was really cute!

Seattle Tattoo Expo (part 1)

We were looking somewhere cool to go today and ended up at the Seattle Tattoo Expo. We were thinking about air conditioning but got the other kind of cool instead. It was amazing! I also did something I said I was never going to do....I got a tattoo!

Here are some of my pictures.

As we walked in we saw a guy using both hands to paint this picture. He had headphones on and was oblivious to everything around him. The picture was amazing although you can't see the detail in this photograph.

There were some really cute purses, baby onsies and dresses with tattoo designs on them.

I love downtown Seattle! There were alot of people laying in the grass in the park and playing in the pool and fountain at Seattle Center.

We found a pretty little courtyard with a water sculpture and some tables in the shade. 

Tony brought his camera and was taking his own pictures. As usual I had to take a picture of him taking pictures.

I only took a few pictures of people and their tattoos.

This guy was in the portrait contest.

I still have alot more pictures.....but I'll save the best ones for tomorrow.....the Burlesque Show!

Beautiful Saturday

I'm finally feeling better after getting gel shots in my knees and another cortosone shot in my back. I'm ready to enjoy this beautiful Saturday. It's sunny and going to be 85F here in the beautiful PNW. I hope to get out and enjoy it.

As promised here is a picture of my completed bracelet. I used a little magnetic closure to make it easy to get on and off. I'm happy with how it turned out.

I'm off to enjoy the day! I hope you all have a wonderful Saturday too!

New beads

When I was on vacation in Calgary I went to a bead store with my daughter-in-law. I can't remember the name of the store but they had some very unique beads that I couldn't live without. I don't know what I'm going to make with them yet but I'm excited to create something beautiful.

Last night I finished making some earrings. I like how they turned out.

 

Tonight I finished making a bracelet. I used size 15 delica beads...the smallest I've ever used. Here is a picture of the beads I made and the beautiful smokey quartz. I'll post a picture of the bracelet tomorrow.
